Variations

The recipe I am sharing with you today is a basic outline of how I like to make Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats, but feel free to change and customize this recipe to your hearts desires! Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

  • Mix Ins: consider mixing in mini chocolate chips or be a little more adventurous and try adding in bacon bits!
  • Using Different Cereal: this can be anything from the chocolate version of rice Krispie treats to cheerios. You could even use potato chips or crackers for a salty-sweet concoction.
  • Toppings: you know I am all about a salted caramel drizzle (which would be perfect on these bars) or you could even top it these with something like flavored icing!

Tips + Tricks for the Best Rice Krispie Treats Out There!

  • Use Fresh Marshmallows – skip the stale bag of marhsmallows in your pantry and instead use fresh marshmallows. Trust me, fresh is best!
  • Loosely Pack ever wonder why your rice krispie treats are so hard do bite into? The problem is that you probably packed the warm mixture too firmly in the pan. To avoid this, try your best to loosely and gently pack the mixture down.
  • Avoid Stickiness – and to avoid sticky fingers and/or utensils, give whatever tools you are using a quick spray down with nonstick cooking spray!

  1. Grease a glass pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a large saucepan, brown your butter.
  2. Turn the heat to low, and mix in marshmallows. Melt.

  4. Turn off heat and pour in more marshmallows. Melt slightly, but not all the way. We want some of these chunks of marshmallows shining through!

How to Brown Butter

Browning Butter is simply a process in which you toast the milk solids found in regular butter.

So, to brown butter, start by melting it in a pot. It will eventually start to foam (don’t worry that’s what it’s supposed to do). Swirl the pan as it foams and after a minute or two, you’ll notice little brown flecks in the butter that have started to smell nutty. You are going to want the butter to become a medium brown color before adding in the marshmallows. Voila! Browned Butter!
