Lava Cake | So Decadent and Easy!

I adore lava cakes, not only because they taste so good but also because they are actually a lot easier to make than you think. You only need a few pantry staples and a little bit of time before you have a decadent dessert ready to eat! Plus you can customize this recipe with unique toppings. It’s overall a win-win-win type of dessert that is sure to please just about anyone.

Main Ingredients Needed

You only need 5 common household ingredients to make these amazing lava cakes! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate – you can either use baking squares or chocolate chips! Whatever you have on hand.
  • Butter – butter is melted and mixed with the chocolate to add a bit more fat and to create the perfect base for the batter.
  • Powdered Sugar – to sweeten and thicken the batter.
  • Eggs + Egg Yolks – the perfect amount of protein and moisture to create a cakey outside and a gooey inside.
  • Flour – to add some structure to the cakes.

1. Preheat + Prep

Preheat the oven. Prepare 4 custard cups by spraying them with nonstick cooking spray and place them on a baking sheet.

2. Make Lava Cake Batter

Melt butter and chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl until butter is melted. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted. Add sugar and mix until well blended. Whisk in eggs and egg yolks. Add in flour.

3. Bake + Serve!

Divide evenly between prepared custard cups. Bake until the sides are firm and the center is soft. Let the cakes stand for 1 minute before inverting cups and removing them. Serve warm with ice cream!

Toppings

I love to top my lava cake with a dusting of powdered sugar and a couple of fresh berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, etc.) Here are a couple more ideas for lava cake toppings:

Make-Ahead

Prepare the lava cake batter up to 2 days in advance! But be sure to let the batter come to room temperature before baking.

Freezing Lava Cakes

Freeze baked lava cakes for up to 3 months! Reheat in the microwave (be careful not to overdo it, you still want the center to be runny.
