Spiced cake laced with apples topped with a buttery oat crumble and a generous drizzle of cream cheese icing. This is my Apple Crumble Cake!
Apple Crumble Cake
This Apple Crumble Cake is simple and easy to throw together yet looks so much fancier than it actually is! The recipe starts out with a spiced cake that is soft and moist. In it are pieces of peeled and cut-up apples, hello yum town! Now before baking the whole thing is topped with an oaty nutty crumble topping. After baking the whole thing is then topped with cream cheese icing. And as you can see below, the results are stunning. What are you waiting for? Let’s make this cake!
Main Ingredients Needed
I know this list looks long but trust me this recipe is worth it! Gather up these ingredients to start making this Apple Crumble Cake:
- Flour – this is the main bulk of the cake.
- Baking Powder + Baking Soda – these two are leavening agents aka they help create a light and fluffy cake.
- Salt – to enhance and balance flavors.
- Granulated Sugar – to sweeten.
- Cinnamon + Nutmeg – these two work hand-in-hand to create a warm spiced cake.
- Apples – you can use whichever apples you have on hand but a common favorite is the granny smith apple. Tart yet sweet!
- Canola Oil – for moisture!
- Eggs – this adds structure and texture.
- Buttermilk + Sour Cream – I used low fat buttermilk and low fat sour cream which still provide moisture and a slight tang without all of the extra fat. If you don’t have either of these, replace with milk.
- Vanilla – for flavor!
For the Crumble
- Oats – this creates a crumbly tasty texture.
- Flour – this captures the rest of the butter without weighing it down.
- Granulated Sugar – to sweeten.
- Butter – this allows all of the dry ingredients to stick together.
- Cinnamon – a warm spice to flavor the crumble.
- Walnuts – for crunch and nuttiness. Feel free to use a different kind of nut or leave it out completely.
For the Icing
- Cream Cheese + Butter – these two are softened and create the base of the icing. The cream cheese speficically brings that amazing tangy flavor.
- Powdered Sugar – to sweeten without all of the grittiness.
- Vanilla – to flavor.
- Milk – to thin out the icing to the desired consistency.
How to Make Apple Crumble Cake
For full details on how to make this Apple Crumble Cake, see the recipe card down below 🙂
Step 1: Preheat + Prep
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
Step 2: Make Cake Batter
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Then pour all wet ingredients into the prepared well and slowly start to mix the dry and wet together. Stir until just combined. Add in the prepared apples then pour the finished batter into the springform pan.
Step 3: Make Crumble Topping
To make the crumble topping, combine all ingredients for it in a small bowl. The butter pieces should be small chunks found throughout the mixture. Sprinkle over the top of the cake batter.
Step 4: Bake + Cool
Bake 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Remove from the oven and cool completely before adding icing.
Step 5: Make the Icing
To make the icing whip together the softened cream cheese and butter. Next add in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk, mix until smooth and runny. If needed add more milk until the desired consistency is reached.
Step 6: Assemble + Serve
Once the cake is cooled and the icing is ready, unhinge the springform pan and place the cake on a serving platter. Drizzle the icing over the entire cake then serve!
