You’re going to love this Apple Crisp Recipe made from scratch! Soft baked cinnamony apples with a buttery crisp oat topping. YUM!

Warm soft apples laced with cinnamon and a crispy oat topping, this is Homemade Apple Crisp! I love topping mine with vanilla ice cream for that warm-cold contrast. It’s like a deconstructed apple pie, so good!

A Crisp vs. A Crumble

But first of all what even makes this recipe a crisp and not a crumble? The main difference between the two is the apple crisp topping contains oats whereas a crumble topping is more like a streusel. The addition of oats (and sometimes nuts) creates, that’s right, a crispier topping. Which is exactly what we want!

However, if you’re looking to make an apple crumble, simply leave out the oats!

Apple Crisp Recipe

Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty, this is everything you’ll need to make this apple crisp recipe:

  • Apples – this wouldn’t be an apple crisp recipe without apples! More on what kind I used below.
  • Granulated Sugar – this is used to sweeten the filling and to help caramelize the baked apples.
  • Butter – melted butter to be exact! This adds flavor and helps cook the apples.
  • All-Purpose Flour – to thicken the sauce created when baked.
  • Cinnamon – what a great flavor to go with apples. Warm and comforting!
  • Lemon Juice – some fresh flavor to compliment the apples.
  • All-Purpose Flour, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Cold Butter, Salt, and Rolled Oats – these are all of the ingredients for the crisp topping! Make sure your butter is cold!

What Type of Apple Should I Use?

Now for the apples! I used Granny Smith Apples for this apple crisp recipe. This is because Granny Smith Apples hold their shape and don’t get mushy when baked (plus they are relatively inexpensive).

If you don’t want to use Granny Smith you could also use Honeycrisp, Braeburn or Pink Lady.

Do I have to Peel the Apples?

Nope! You don’t have to peel the apples if you don’t want to, just don’t forget to core and cut them up.

Apple Crisp Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • Cutting In Butter. For the crisp topping the butter needs to be cut in super well. That means using your hands near the end of mixing. I know that’s not the best of feelings on your fingertips but it’s worth it!
  • Covering. No need to cover this apple crisp while baking, the top should brown evenly. If by some chance the top is getting too brown, just cover with some tinfoil and finish baking.
  • Slicing. Be sure to slice your apples evenly so that they bake evenly!
  • Toppings. You could try adding nuts to the crisp topping, such as walnuts, for an additional crunch. Then finish off the whole thing with vanilla ice cream and maybe some warm caramel sauce.
