Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats
Today we are combining the best of two worlds: salted caramel and Rice Krispie Treats. This recipe is not only easy, it’s addicting. Now that’s a dangerous combination. You start out simple by making homemade rice Krispie treats then you melt some caramels, mix it with heavy cream and drizzle it all over the bars. The last step is to sprinkle with sea salt (as much or as little as you’d like)! The results are magical, you get the crispy crunch from the rice Krispies mixed with the gooey-ness from the caramel. Sweetness from the marshmallows but also some salty notes. What are you waiting for? Here are all of the nitty-gritty details!
Main Ingredients Needed
- Butter – this allows for the marshmallows to melt evenly without making a sticky mess.
- Marshmallows – I used mini marshmallows because they melt more quickly. But you could also use regular sized marshmallows for this recipe.
- Rice Krispie Cereal – find this in the cereal aisle at the store. Light and airy with the perfect crunch! Plus they’re gluten-free!
- Soft Caramels + Heavy Cream – you’re going to want the square soft caramels for this recipe. We basically make a caramel ganache that is the perfect drizzling consistency.
- Coarse Salt (or Sea Salt) – use what you have people! Even himilayan sea salt would work. Add as much or as little as you’d like.
Can I use regular salted caramel?
Yes! You can absolutely use my Salted Caramel Sauce recipe. Or just buy some good quality store-bought caramel sauce then sprinkle with salt.
How to Make Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats
For full details on how to make Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats, see the recipe card down below 🙂
1. Prep
Spray 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
2. Make Rice Krispies
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Mix in 4 cups of marshmallows and melt completely. Add in Rice Krispies and the other 2 cups of marshmallows. Mix until the 2 cups of marshmallows are melted slightly.
3. Allow to Cool
Pour into sprayed pan and press Rice Krispies down evenly with a silicone spatula.
4. Make Caramel
In a small, microwavable bowl, melt together caramels and heavy cream in 30-second increments. (It took us about 1 min 15 seconds total)
5. Drizzle + Sprinkle
Cut Rice Krispies into squares, place on parchment paper, and drizzle with melted caramel. If the caramel starts to set in the bowl before you can use it all up, place it in the microwave for a few more seconds to warm up!
After caramel is drizzled onto squares, sprinkle with coarse salt or sea salt.
Storing Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats
These babies can get a little sticky when stored but they should stay good for up to a week at room temperature. Be sure to cover with some plastic wrap so that they don’t dry out.
If you are wanting to stack these I would suggest layering them between wax paper to prevent sticking.
