If you’re making Patriotic Oreo Balls for your July 4th festivities, this is the version to trust. They’re smooth, festive, and easy to decorate with red, white, and blue. I’ve tested every step to make sure they look great and taste even better, all with simple ingredients and zero stress.
Ingredient Notes + Variations
This recipe comes together with just a few store-bought staples, which is exactly what you want when you’re prepping for a cookout or party. The red, white, and blue theme makes these feel festive, even though the steps are incredibly simple.
- Oreo cookies – Classic chocolate ones work best. Don’t remove the filling!
- Cream cheese – Make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it mixes smoothly with the crushed cookies.
- White, red, and blue candy melts – These melt evenly and harden quickly. Great for dipping and decorating.
- Sprinkles – Optional… but are they really?
How to Make Patriotic Oreo Balls
These July 4th Oreo Balls are surprisingly easy to pull together. A quick blitz in the food processor, a little mix-and-roll action, and then it’s just dip, drizzle, decorate. Scroll down for the full printable recipe card with ingredient amounts and step by step instructions, but here’s the basic rundown.
Step 1: Crush + Mix
pulse the Oreos in a food processor
mix with softened cream cheese
Step 2: Roll + Freeze
Scoop into 1-inch balls, roll smooth, and freeze on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 20 minutes.
Step 3: Melt + Dip + Decorate
melt each color of candy melts and dip balls
drizzle with more candy melts and sprinkles
Tips for Success
- Use full-fat cream cheese. The texture is firmer and holds up better.
- If the dough sticks to your hands when rolling the balls, you’ll need to wash them occasionally.
- If your melted chocolate is too thick, stir in a drop of coconut oil or Crisco to smooth it out.
- A fork works better than a toothpick for dipping. Less mess, better control.
- Don’t skip the chill time… soft truffles won’t hold their shape in warm candy coating.
These Patriotic Oreo Balls are festive, foolproof, and honestly kind of fun to make. Keep them chilled, serve them up, and watch them disappear fast. Your printable recipe card is below. Happy 4th of July, friends! 🇺🇸
Patriotic Oreo Balls
Ingredients
- 36 Oreo cookies
- 8 oz cream cheese softened to room temperature
- 10 oz chocolate melting wafers red, white, and blue (10 oz total between all 3 colors)
- sprinkles and jimmies patriotic
Instructions
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until finely crushed into crumbs.
- Transfer the crumbs to a large bowl, and add cream cheese. Using an electric hand mixer, mix until fully combined.
- Using a cookie scoop, scoop the mixture, and roll into about 1 inch balls using clean hands. If the dough begins to stick to your hands, you’ll need to wash them occasionally.
- Place balls on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for at least 20 minutes.
- Right before you're ready to pull out your balls, melt red, white and blue candy melts in separate microwave-safe bowls. Start out with 30 seconds per bowl, stir, and then melt at 20-second increments until melted.
- Using a fork, dip each ball into the melted chocolate color of your choice, gently tapping off the excess. Place the dipped balls on the parchment paper to harden.
- After all the balls are dipped and hardened (about 10-15 minutes), use the remaining chocolate to drizzle/decorate as desired. Top with festive sprinkles and jimmies, and serve.
